City of Shawnee Advocates Crime Prevention

crime prevention
A police officer by the name of Terry Kegin has the role of crime prevention security specialist in the city of Shawnee, and apparently he is always busy.
Officer Kegan is a central component of the department's Crime Prevention program, which is designed to help citizens, local businesses and other organizations that have concerns about preventing crime and staying safe. Kegan also has the help of 3 different D.A.R.E. officers, who generally do work with children at the local schools.
During this month, Kegin spent some time speaking to Boy Scout, Cub Scout and Girl Scout groups, and has also done some speaking at a couple day care locations.
"It's the stuff I do all year long, but more so in October because people learn it's Crime Prevention Month and try to get things scheduled," Kegan mentioned.
Recently, officer Kegin made a visit to Bluejacket-Flint Elementary School for an evening event with "McGruff," the crime fighting dog. McGruff will also join Kegan on Saturday for a child ID event that is being held at the Bank of America, along with Historical Hauntings, which is being held on October 27th. They will also appear at the Shawnee Safe Scare on Halloween, which is to be held near the corner of 75th St. and Quivira Rd.
"The McGruff costume gets used quite a bit in October because Crime Prevention Month is put on by the National Crime Prevention Council in Washington and they own the McGruff trademark," Kegin mentioned. "All crime prevention officers try to push safety because we know at the end of month we've got a lot of kids that are going to be out on the street."
