Police Chief In Florida Cracks Down On Juvenile Crime

The police chief of Daytona Beach, FL has seen an increase in juvenile crime over the years and now he is ready to do something about it.
Mike Chitwood, chief of the Daytona Beach Police Department, wants to set a curfew for minors in the city and he also plans to create a truancy court. In addition to this, he also wants to keep a closer watch on repeat juvenile criminals as well as parents that he feels are accountable for the behavior of their children.
Chitwood mentions that crimes are being committed by younger people more and more each day and that the level of violence among children is increasing as well. His curfew will hopefully enforce a fifty-dollar fine that parents will receive if their children are out too late.
“From our standpoint, from police our job is maintenance,” Chitwood mentioned. “You know when they come in contact with us the second part of the system needs to come in.”
In terms of truancy, the chief says research has shown that kids who ditch school have more potential to become criminals.
Since Chitwood feels that parents are accountable for the actions of their children, he hopes to create a system that gets the adults involved too. If parents let their kids stay out as late as they want, then they are part of the problem as well.
"So you can get the counseling," Chitwood mentioned. "And get these kids and divert them before they're 19 years old and they've just shot and killed somebody."
