Crime Statistics Show An Increase In Small Massachusetts Towns
As the violent crime rate drops in cities like New Bedford, Boston, and Brockton, little towns like Arlington & Haverhill have been experiencing a rise in criminal activity, which includes more aggravated assaults and robberies. This information was gathered by twenty-five separate police departments in the state. It is not exactly clear why crime rates are going up in small towns, but some authorities believe that gang-bangers and other criminals are moving to suburban areas that do not crack down on crime as much. Other authorities believe that heroin-addicts in small towns are beginning to commit more robberies so that they can pay for their habits.
"We can't stick our heads in the sand and not recognize that there has been an increase in crime," mentioned Fred Ryan, Police Chief of Arlington.
Chief Ryan also mentioned that the fact that Arlington is close to cities like Somerville and Cambridge has helped make it the "recipient of some displaced crime from our more urban neighbors."
These statistics showed crime comparisons for the first 6 months of years 2006 and 2007. The data also pointed to some positive results as well, where the total amount of violent crimes for twenty-five municipalities dropped by five percent.
However, some authorities still have bad feelings about future crime statistics.
"Even though there are some reductions and some increases, overall we're seeing a level of violence that urban areas are experiencing that is beyond what local communities can address," mentioned Gary Gemme, Worcester police chief. "There are a lot of challenges that are taking place in urban areas, and we need state resources."
