Local Law Enforcement Joins Forces With FBI To Attack Computer Crime

computer crime
A new partnership with the FBI and several local police departments will give Bay City police officers the opportunity to become more "self-sufficient," according to Chief of Police Michael J. Cecchini.
Earlier this week, the Bay City Commission gave the green light for Cecchini to take out an agreement with the Federal Bureau of Investigation that also joins forces with the Mid-Michigan Area Computer Crime Task Force.
Being partners with the Computer Crime group, Bay City will allow the task force to use 1 sworn police officer on a full-time basis for the next 2 years. The FBI will give the task force an unmarked vehicle, a mobile phone and finance all of the required training and travel expenses for the officer.
The goal of this operation is to have a well-trained officer working for the Bay City Police who will give the agency the ability to take on computer crimes, according to Cecchini. Computer crimes usually include national security threats, fraud, computer scams and child pornography.
"Instead of having to send these types of investigations out, I can have that done in-house," he mentioned. "It makes us more self-sufficient."
The police department in Bay City will also be represented in the computer crime task force's oversight committee.
"It's collaboration," stated Commissioner Charles M. Brunner of the 9th Ward. "Often times we think of collaboration as what we can put together with surrounding townships. In this case, it's collaboration with federal agencies. It's going to allow us to do great things."

Sunderland Publicized As City With Excellent Crime Safety Record

crime safety
It has recently been made public that Sunderland, UK is the least dangerous big city in the Northern part of the country and a campaign to let it be known has jumped off to a good start.
The latest statistics have revealed that there are ten thousand less crime victims in Sunderland when compared to figures from four years ago.
Also, the Safer Sunderland Partnership, which has been running for two years now, says that the city's crime rate is less than the country's average.
However, although the Safer Sunderland Partnership wants to publicize its efforts in advocating crime safety and taking on antisocial behavior with the start of its recent "Spread the Word" campaign, crime victims do not feel completely at ease.
This brand new program plans on celebrating the city's achievements, while still reinforcing the message that ninety-five out of one hundred young citizens living in Sunderland do not ever get into trouble.
Chairman of the partnership, Coun Tom Foster, mentioned: "The partnership has achieved quite remarkable results since it was formed in 2005."
He also added, "The city is recognized nationally for some of its innovative programs, including tackling antisocial behavior, and can proudly claim that across Sunderland, out of 100 young people 95 are never involved in trouble."

Green Party Wants Legislation For Hate Crimes Regarding Homophobia

hate crimes
As a result of the unfortunate murder of Tony Hoare that occurred 2 weeks ago, the Green Party has once again made a prompt demand for homophobic and transphobic hate crime laws to be introduced.
Mr. Hoare, who was 49 years old, was discovered in Charlton Park of South East London on the 11th of this month. He was found in an unconscious state and later that evening he died in Queen Elizabeth Hospital of Woolwich.
Tony Hoare was the front man for the Stormbreak consultancy, which works in LGBT research. He had recently put out a report entitled, "Homophobic Crime in London" which mentioned that there was a major lack of reporting for homophobic crime in London.
Tony's report discovered: "The main reason for not reporting homophobic crime was because the incident had been considered insufficiently serious. Commonplace verbal abuse, for example, was hardly ever reported. This suggests that the London lesbian and gay community simply puts up with insults, threats and ridicule in public and (as often identified) in the workplace as a fact of everyday life."
Just months ago, the Green Party started a petition on the Prime Minster's Website requesting the addition of certain legislation for homophobic and transphobic hate crimes. This petition currently has approximately 1,000 signatures.

Authorities Try to Reach Out to Youth in Africa for Crime Prevention

crime prevention
Kwasi Fori, the Deputy Superintendent of Police and current Director of the Public Relations Department for the Police Headquarters in Ghana has reached out to younger crowds in an attempt to help police lower the crime rate. The reason for this is because younger people tend to contribute more to the crime rate in this area.
By speaking to the youth, Fori is trying to help make sure that they will have a brighter future.
"The number of youth involved in crime and drug related issues is very alarming. Expose criminals in your communities and report all cases that involve crimes", he mentioned.
Fori spoke at a Youth Crime Watch forum about crime prevention in Ghana, or more specifically its capital, Accra. Fori mentioned that the abundance of crime and criminals in the area leads to a decrease in the movement of socio-economic growth within the country. The tranquility and safety in a society like this is also affected. "Without peace and security, we cannot achieve development", Fori said.
The Police Service, Fori mentioned, is a professional facility and it is putting a lot of funds into public education and crime prevention programs that can help keep the youth off of drugs and away from crime and violence. He reached out to the youth to create crime prevention groups within schools and other appropriate places to assist the police in fighting crime.

Crime Safety Tips For People In The Workplace

crime safety
There are plenty of things that one can do to stay a little safer in the workplace. Dressing suitably and being clean-cut "sends a strong message" to thieves that you and your colleagues are professionals who are attentive and ready to take care of any situation.

Stay attentive so that you know who is on your property and where they are while also having a watchful eye on others who stick around without purchasing anything.

Pay attention to conspicuous happenings outside of your workplace. Record license plate numbers of automobiles that look suspicious if you are able to clearly read them.

Stay alert for people who may also be hanging around outside of your workplace or place of business as they may be planning to do something to your property or your customer as they are leaving.

Be certain that the sales counter is easily visible. Don't post advertisements, displays, flyers, posters, signs or other things on windows or doors that might block the view of the cash register. It is critical that the police are able to see in your store when driving by.

Always attempt to say hello to a customer who enters your store. Look at their eyes when speaking to them and ask them if they need any assistance. Being attentive can sometimes make a robber feel discouraged.

$10,000 Donated By Chrysler Foundation to Help Prevent Computer Crime

computer crime
The computer crime team of the Macomb County Sheriff's Department can now be more effective when investigating Internet predators, as well as locating online criminals since the Chrysler foundation recently donated 10,000 dollars to their unit known as the Macomb Area Computer Crimes Enforcement team.

"This is quite a substantial donation -- one of the largest single donations we've ever gotten," Mark Hackel, the Macomb County Sheriff stated.

The donation will buy a Forensic Recovery Evidentiary Device, also known as FRED, according to the Sheriff. The MACE team is already equipped with one of these machines, and they can now acquire one more.

"It's a computer that enables us to take information off other computers' hard drives," Hackel mentioned. "That's a long, tedious process, and having a second system will help expedite these investigations."

This generous donation is the first that the Chrysler Foundation has ever given to the Macomb Sheriff's Office, according to Brian Glowiak, the vice-president of the foundation.

"Our mission is to help improve the quality of life where our employees and neighbors live," Glowiak said. "This is something that will help people be safe from things like computer fraud and sexual predators."

The sheriff mentioned that his department's computer crime team has expanded greatly during recent years.

"At one time we had to send computers to Oakland County to be investigated," Hackel mentioned. "They had a backlog of cases up to six months, so it made sense for Macomb County to have its own computer unit."

"The online sexual predators are the cases the media pays the most attention to, but the two biggest concerns we have with computer crimes are identity theft and fraud," stated Hackel. "Those are among our biggest problems."
