Sheriff Joe Will Not Tolerate Hate Crimes

hate crimes A home in the area of Litchfield Park, AZ, was recently the victim of what sheriff's deputies refer to as a hate crime.

Joe Arpaio, the Maricopa County Sheriff, responded to the incident rather quickly, mentioning that hate crimes will not be tolerated in this county.

"It is critical that anyone with information come forward to speak with my detectives," Arpaio mentioned.

Sheriff Joe took action last November after criminals wrote racist and vulgar phrases on the walls of Walter and Judith Conley's 800,000-dollar home. The Conleys are an African-American married couple in their sixties.

The hate crime, which is unsolved to this day, occurred at a gated community known as Litchfield Farms which is located northeast of Thomas Road and Jackrabbit Trail.

The deputies are now investigating the more recent crime, calling it a "hate-related burglary." This crime occurred at a household off of West Windsor Blvd., a few blocks north of Camelback Road. The home is also in the area of Litchfield Park, according to Detective Charles Scudella.

If you have any information that can be helpful to solving this crime, contact the sheriff's deputies at 602-876-1011.

A Young Man and His Father Both Jailed For Sex Crimes

sex crimes
Unrelated charges for sex crimes had both a boy and his father in a Russell County court this week.
The man, Timothy Edward Daugherty, appeared with his son, Timothy Edward Daugherty Jr., who were both given sentences for their offenses by George Greene, a Russell County Circuit Court Judge.
The son, who is 19 years old, will be spending 5 years in jail for sexually abusing a young boy in the first degree, and for the rape of a 14-year-old girl in the second degree, according to Assistant District Attorney Max Smith.
The father, who is 41 years old, received a sentence of ninety days in prison followed by 2 years of probation for not complying with a court order to register as a sex offender.
"For me, the most important thing is that (the son) is a sex offender and will be for the rest of his life," Smith mentioned.
At the sentencing of Daugherty Jr., Smith read a statement that was made by the young boy he abused.
" 'After you started to molest me, I did not think you were my friend anymore,' " Smith read. " 'Sometimes when I think of you, I scream into my pillow. When and if I ever see you again, I will walk away.' "
Police were informed of the incident when a relative of the boy called the Russell County Sheriff's Department in October of 2006, over a year after it had happened. Another young boy had seen Daugherty Jr. touch the boy inappropriately and contacted the relative about it.

Police Chief In Florida Cracks Down On Juvenile Crime

juvenile crime
The police chief of Daytona Beach, FL has seen an increase in juvenile crime over the years and now he is ready to do something about it.
Mike Chitwood, chief of the Daytona Beach Police Department, wants to set a curfew for minors in the city and he also plans to create a truancy court. In addition to this, he also wants to keep a closer watch on repeat juvenile criminals as well as parents that he feels are accountable for the behavior of their children.
Chitwood mentions that crimes are being committed by younger people more and more each day and that the level of violence among children is increasing as well. His curfew will hopefully enforce a fifty-dollar fine that parents will receive if their children are out too late.
“From our standpoint, from police our job is maintenance,” Chitwood mentioned. “You know when they come in contact with us the second part of the system needs to come in.”
In terms of truancy, the chief says research has shown that kids who ditch school have more potential to become criminals.
Since Chitwood feels that parents are accountable for the actions of their children, he hopes to create a system that gets the adults involved too. If parents let their kids stay out as late as they want, then they are part of the problem as well.
"So you can get the counseling," Chitwood mentioned. "And get these kids and divert them before they're 19 years old and they've just shot and killed somebody."

City of Shawnee Advocates Crime Prevention

crime prevention
A police officer by the name of Terry Kegin has the role of crime prevention security specialist in the city of Shawnee, and apparently he is always busy.
Officer Kegan is a central component of the department's Crime Prevention program, which is designed to help citizens, local businesses and other organizations that have concerns about preventing crime and staying safe. Kegan also has the help of 3 different D.A.R.E. officers, who generally do work with children at the local schools.
During this month, Kegin spent some time speaking to Boy Scout, Cub Scout and Girl Scout groups, and has also done some speaking at a couple day care locations.
"It's the stuff I do all year long, but more so in October because people learn it's Crime Prevention Month and try to get things scheduled," Kegan mentioned.
Recently, officer Kegin made a visit to Bluejacket-Flint Elementary School for an evening event with "McGruff," the crime fighting dog. McGruff will also join Kegan on Saturday for a child ID event that is being held at the Bank of America, along with Historical Hauntings, which is being held on October 27th. They will also appear at the Shawnee Safe Scare on Halloween, which is to be held near the corner of 75th St. and Quivira Rd.
"The McGruff costume gets used quite a bit in October because Crime Prevention Month is put on by the National Crime Prevention Council in Washington and they own the McGruff trademark," Kegin mentioned. "All crime prevention officers try to push safety because we know at the end of month we've got a lot of kids that are going to be out on the street."

White Collar Crime Prosecutions Have Gone Down, But What Is The Reason For It?

white collar crime
The problem with statistics is that they can sometimes be misleading. According to a recent data report of the Justice Department, the number of white collar criminals that are being prosecuted federally has dropped greatly since President George W. Bush was elected. The number of corrupt public authorities being prosecuted federally has also gone down.
A research group known as the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), which has an affiliation with Syracuse University, analyzed the recent data and discovered that the amount of white collar criminals being prosecuted has dropped twenty seven percent between the fiscal years of 2000 and 2007. The amount of prosecutions for corrupt public officials has dropped fourteen percent during this same time period.
The unfortunate thing is that these declines are most likely not the result of less criminal activity. The reality, according to TRAC, is that much of the funds and resources that were previously used to prevent white collar crime activity and prosecute offenders were put into counterterrorism. This lack of resources is most noticeable during the fiscal year of 2004.
It is difficult to argue an issue such as this, considering that a lot of resources are certainly needed to fight terrorism. However, this brings up a couple of important questions. First of all, is all of the money that is being dumped into counterterrorism being used appropriately? And more importantly, what other issues are being deprived of funds as a result of counterterrorism being a high priority?

Strict Guidelines For Hunting instructor Involved In Sex Crimes With Children

sex crimes
Kevin Hoyt, a hunting instructor and television personality now must adhere to some strict legal guidelines. Hoyt, who has his own television show about teaching hunting skills to kids, now must stay even further away from children as his bail conditions have been set in stone. Hoyt claims that he is innocent of charges of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child.
During his arraignment a couple months ago, the 37-year-old man from Bennington was denied a defense request by Judge David Howard. The request was for Hoyt to be able to make contact with kids under the age of sixteen in order to continue the production of his television show.
Part of Hoyt's work includes taking kids on hunting trips, both in state and out-of-state. He has even recorded some of the trips for his local access show.
Last month, Judge Katherine Hayes of the Vermont District Court amended the rules of release by allowing him to have contact with children only when permission was given by the parents or guardians.
Following this decision, Bennington County Deputy State's Attorney Christina Rainville challenged Hayes' decision by appealing it to the Vermont Supreme Court. Here, Associate Justice Brian Burgess overruled Hayes' decision by making Hoyt's conditions even more strict.
The justice made it clear that the only way Mr. Hoyt will ever have contact with children is when they are accompanied by another adult. Hoyt must also prove to the state that permission was provided by the child's parents through use of documentation. In addition to this, the child's parents must also be informed of the sex crimes that Hoyt is being accused of as well as the pending charges against him.

Attorney General Requests Funds To Fight Internet Crime In Kansas

internet crime
Since the United States relies on computers for everyday life, one of our country's fastest-growing forms of crime is Internet crime. Unfortunately, more funds are needed to help attack it and Attorney General Paul Morrison recently requested it.
Morrison is requesting a total of 433,000 dollars to acquire more investigators and officers who specialize in computers and Internet crime. These funds are also needed to provide education for current police officers that are not experts on the subject.
Morrison is only able to use a couple resources, an investigator and a prosecutor, to combat Internet crime. He feels that this is not nearly enough, considering that there are child predators and con artists out there who pose a real threat through the use of the Internet and e-mail.
He also mentioned that when he took his position as Attorney General, there was a complete lack of investigators and officers who specialized in computer crime.
“We are literally spitting on a forest fire,” Morrison mentioned. “There is a massive void that is not being addressed right now.”
The requested funds would also be used to properly inform children and consumers about how to avoid Internet criminals and con artists. The Legislature plans on looking closer at the proposal in January of 2008.

Louisiana Sheriff Is Here To Help With Crime Prevention

crime prevention
This month is Crime Prevention Month and fortunately there is a good local authority that wants to get involved. The Caddo Parish sheriff's department in Louisiana will be having many events to advocate the use of safety measures as well as inform the public about general crime prevention and safety awareness.
On Thursday, October 4th deputies are taking it to the streets to get in touch with the public about this awareness. They will be supplying information about robbery prevention to help inform businesses in the suburban areas. Although crime prevention is a necessity within the city limits, it is also something that should be taken seriously in the suburbs as well.
Steve Prator, local Sheriff, hopes to properly inform these businesses on how to take correct safety measures and keep their customers out of harms way during this upcoming holiday season.
Other business owners and retailers around the globe should also stay aware of the potential crime that can happen in their neighborhoods. The best way to help with crime prevention is to get involved locally and try to hold events such as these to help promote safety awareness.
