New Zealand Computer Crime King Caught

computer crimePolice in New Zealand finally caught the eighteen-year-old male who was behind a lot of recent criminal activity involving computer fraud. He is now working with authorities to help with various investigations.

This young man, who had the alias of "AKILL," was responsible for the loss of more than 26 million dollars in New Zealand currency as a result of computer crime.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation claimed that AKILL was the man behind a vicious "botnet" that had over a million computers infected with a serious virus. The virus allowed AKILL to gain access to private data and records on countless machines. AKILL is also being accused of causing a serious server crash that recently happened at the University of Pennsylvania.

Electronic Crime Lab Manager Maarten Kleinjtes from the New Zealand Police mentioned that AKILL created a program that was being sold to other computer criminals who wished to cause electronic havoc around the world.

"He hires his services out to others, who make use of that botnet," Kleinjtes mentioned to Radio New Zealand.

"If another cyber criminal wants to do an attack – in this case on the Pennsylvania University computers – then the botherder instructs all the machines that have been infected...to all at the same time attack these computers in Pennsylvania."

Crime Prevention Efforts In Twin Falls, ID

crime preventionAn officer from the Twin Falls Police Department by the name of Luke Allen stated, "I am a one man division right now; hopefully we (will) see through the amount of work that I'm able to do that we can expand and have more people come in the next year." Allen works in the crime prevention unit for the Twin Falls PD.

Allen also mentioned that he will be spending more time working with the victims of crimes, rather than the criminals themselves. "The way I look at it, it’s more as education for the community, not so much preventing crimes, but we want to teach people and show how not to become victims of crime and teach them how to avoid victimization."

He says that he will first begin educating children in the public school system. Allen then hopes that the children will relay the information that they have learned to their parents. An important issue that he wants to discuss with the children involves Internet crime. Allen mentions, "Internet crime is one of the things we're going to look at now to avoid becoming a victim on the Internet, through various things that can occur to children."

As a result of Twin Falls' increasing population, many have noticed that there are more and more crimes involving vandalism and damage to property. Allen mentions, "We have a lot of property crimes in this area; I mean, probably one of our biggest things is our property crimes."

Crime Prevention Tips For The Holiday Season

crime preventionPolice officers in Springfield, Missouri are urging residents and locals to be aware and keep crime prevention tips in consideration for this holiday season. The holidays are a time for fun and joy but they are also a prime time for criminal activity, during both the day and the night.

Here are some tips to keep in mind so that you and your peers can stay safe:

-This is true during all times of the year, but be sure to have all of your doors and windows locked, and keep your overheard garage door closed. It is recommended that you do this even when you are at home. This also includes the entry door that connects your garage to your home.

-Never leave your automatic garage door opener in plain sight if you leave it in your vehicle. Some even recommend that you remove it from your vehicle whenever you are not driving it.

-Up-to-date insurance policies are a must.

-At night, keep outdoor lights on and interior lamps on inside of the house.

-If you are going out of town for the holidays, have a trusted friend or family member periodically get your mail and check your house for you.

Recent Statistics About Hate Crimes

hate crimesLast year, roughly ten thousand individuals in the U.S. were victims of hate crimes due to issues regarding skin color, religion, sexual orientation and ethnicity. This information was reported by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

60 percent of the 9,642 hate crimes that were reported to the FBI were directed at individual people, groups of people, businesses and institutions, while the rest were aimed at property. It is also unfortunate that 13 percent of the crimes were aggravated, which included 3 murders and 6 rape victims.

5,020 victims, which is over 50 percent of those reported, were targeted due to issues involving race. 19% of the incidents resulted in religious differences, which is roughly 1,750 crimes. Many of the attacks were directed at people who were either Jewish or Muslim.

The rest of the statistics involve crimes directed at people because of their sexual orientation or ethnic origin. Keep in mind, also, that these numbers only include those that were reported to the FBI and that not all police departments were able to provide hate crime information.

New Mace Spray Invention Inspired By Spiderman

mace sprayFlorida resident Domonique Torrence got a great idea from the well-known superhero Spiderman. Torrence created a mace spray bracelet that is able to emit different chemicals by simply flicking your wrist. The bracelet shoots out the liquid by pressing a button that is located in one's palm.

"You can hold your books, you can jog and if you are attacked, it's still secured to your hand," Torrence mentioned. He said that his initial inspiration to create the bracelet came from a friend of his that was attacked twice in the state of Miami.

The woman, Mary Fisher, was attacked on two separate occasions at gunpoint, and she feels as though the bracelet could save her from being attacked in the future. "I'm thinking if he grabs you around the neck, you might be able to shoot him with this and disable him," Fisher said.

The bracelet is said to cost thirty dollars, and it will be available for purchase later this year.

Small Town in Connecticut Angry About Sex Crimes

sex crimesA couple months ago a man who was previously convicted of sex crimes was accused of raping a 13-year-old child in a public park and city Councilor Frank Nicastro now wants to take more serious action. Nicastro has requested that registered sex offenders be completely banned from ever entering city parks.

"We have to take a strong stand here," Nicastro mentioned. A unanimous decision was made by the other members of the city council to send the proposal to the Ordinance Committee.

Art Ward, the mayor of Bristol, said, "Our parks should be considered safe havens for the youth of our city." A similar law in Danbury, a nearby town, states that it "prohibits child sex offenders who are required to register in this state from being present in any child safety zone."

A child safety zone is defined as "a public park, playground, recreation center, bathing beach, swimming or wading pool, or sports field or facility and surrounding land," according to a report from the Office of Legislative Research.

In the city of Bristol there are currently ninety-seven registered sex offenders, but the majority of them were convicted of offenses that do not have children involved.

Crime Prevention Tips For Residents In Canada

crime prevention Just recently, the Community Policing Center in Prince George, BC, Canada ended its routine crime prevention week. Tips were provided to residents of the community in order to properly inform them of how to fight crime in the area.

"The highlight for us was being at the Cougars game (Sunday) and it went over really well. We had Safety Bear there, some giveaways, an information counter, and the Cougars were very pleased to have us there to help them celebrate their family day," mentioned Dianne Sears, one of the coordinators at the Community Policing Center.

Crime prevention week usually brings up issues such as gang violence among youths, investment fraud, senior citizen safety, mortgage fraud, and identity theft.

Sears mentioned that the Community Policing Center also organizes other safety programs like Child Find, DARE, Block Watch, Citizens on Patrol, as well as a few others.

This facility is also a place where one can find Claudette Garcia, a officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Garcia mentioned that the power to fight crime can be found in everyone.

"Pay attention to your surroundings at your home. Also target-harden your home. Make sure you have taken ownership of your yard and buildings and vehicles," she mentioned. "That means have proper lighting, locking your buildings and your cars, keep the yard tidy, make sure that anything broken is fixed, that holes in the fence are taken care of."

Crime Statistics Show An Increase In Small Massachusetts Towns

crime statistics As the violent crime rate drops in cities like New Bedford, Boston, and Brockton, little towns like Arlington & Haverhill have been experiencing a rise in criminal activity, which includes more aggravated assaults and robberies. This information was gathered by twenty-five separate police departments in the state.

It is not exactly clear why crime rates are going up in small towns, but some authorities believe that gang-bangers and other criminals are moving to suburban areas that do not crack down on crime as much. Other authorities believe that heroin-addicts in small towns are beginning to commit more robberies so that they can pay for their habits.

"We can't stick our heads in the sand and not recognize that there has been an increase in crime," mentioned Fred Ryan, Police Chief of Arlington.

Chief Ryan also mentioned that the fact that Arlington is close to cities like Somerville and Cambridge has helped make it the "recipient of some displaced crime from our more urban neighbors."

These statistics showed crime comparisons for the first 6 months of years 2006 and 2007. The data also pointed to some positive results as well, where the total amount of violent crimes for twenty-five municipalities dropped by five percent.

However, some authorities still have bad feelings about future crime statistics.

"Even though there are some reductions and some increases, overall we're seeing a level of violence that urban areas are experiencing that is beyond what local communities can address," mentioned Gary Gemme, Worcester police chief. "There are a lot of challenges that are taking place in urban areas, and we need state resources."

However, they have also created many problems for people who becoming victims of Internet crime and other forms of fraud. Computers and other forms of technology are useful tools that are in the hands of both the good and the bad.

Neville Melville, which is an ombudsman for bank services in South Africa, mentioned that Internet crime in the area of banking has gone up twenty percent over the last year. This type of crime constitutes any action where someone obtains unauthorized access to a bank account and then steals funds from it.

Melville also mentioned that many computers, both at home and at the office, are being hacked regularly. This also includes mobile phones, which are becoming more of a problem in terms of fraud as well.
