Curious About Crime Statistics In Your Town?

crime statisticsThere is a great website called City Data that can tell you almost anything about a given city in the U.S.A. The data for each city also includes crime statistics and information, and it is usually presented in a table that is easy to refer to.

Crime statistics are given in two different forms for each year. The actual number of crimes committed is provided, as well as the amount per 100,000 residents. The information is also presented in the form of an index which can be compared to the nation's overall index.

This website is very interesting because it can help you learn a lot about your home town that you might not already know. It is also very useful for individuals who are planning on moving to a new city because it can make them aware of the amount of crime that is present in certain areas.

I highly recommend visiting www.city-data.com if you want to know anything about a particular town or city in the U.S. There is also plenty of other information available such as demographics, weather, schools and much more.

Gun Safety Cannot Be Overlooked

gun safetyUnfortunately, I am surprised to see that many stories keep appearing in regards to firearm accidents that involve children. It is very easy to point the finger at the parents, but we must understand that there are other role models who can help prevent such accidents. Education about guns and other violent weapons should be promoted at all costs.

A couple recent stories involve teenage youths who were victims of accidental gunfire. One event involved a seventeen-year-old girl from Moundsville, WV who was accidentally shot by one of her peers. In another incident, a seventeen-year-old boy from New Cumberland suffered a gunshot wound that was inflicted upon him by his brother.

Stories like these are evidence of the fact that children are not being provided the proper education about weapons and gun safety. Whether or not your household contains firearms is not the issue. It is still important to stress the dangers of guns and their uses to your children, and it must be reinforced in their minds. Parents should not completely rely on school programs and other forms of outside education for this, and it is crucial that they speak with their kids about these issues on a regular basis.

Crime Prevention Help - E-mail Scams

crime preventionThere was some recent activity in regards to e-mail fraud that was brought to the attention of the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department in Colorado. The e-mail messages that were being distributed are very common, and you may have seen some like this yourself.

The e-mails claimed to be from a foreign bank, in this case the Philippines, and they stated that the recipient is entitled to a rather large amount of money with no strings attached. Following this, the e-mail message asks the reader to provide personal information including name, address, and eventually bank account information.

I would hope that most people would be cautious enough to not provide information like this to an unfamiliar party, but it appears that some have fallen for the scam.

Thankfully, there are plenty of measures that one can take to prevent themselves from becoming a victim. First of all, do not ever provide personal information to someone unless you know exactly who they are. Even if you receive an e-mail from your own banker who requests this information, be sure to contact the bank by phone to determine whether or not the e-mail message is legitimate.

Also avoid clicking any links in email messages from unfamiliar sources. If the e-mail claims to be from your own bank, then manually type in the website address for your bank into your browser. I have personally received fraudulent e-mail's from what appeared to be my personal bank, and I made sure that I did not click anything inside of that message.

The Internet offers a lot of convenience, but unfortunately, there is a lot of potential for disaster. Luckily, there are plenty of people on the Internet who distribute crime prevention tips like these to the world.

Computer Crime Threats During The Holidays

computer crimeIf you ever receive Christmas e-cards (electronic greeting cards) then be certain that you know where it is coming from. Sometimes it is hard to tell whether or not these are from friendly sources.

Kathy Tyson, a real estate agent from Tennessee, had 3 e-cards waiting in her inbox shortly after Thanksgiving. These cards, however, were not from friends that she knew.

"By the time I got the second one, it was pretty clear that these were just spam," Kathy mentioned. "I can't prove that they were sent by bad people, but they definitely weren't friendly sources. I just deleted them."

If you ever come across a scenario similar to this one, then be sure to just delete the electronic greeting cards. E-cards can potentially infect your computer with viruses and cause you a lot of stress. These electronic threats are nothing new, but they have become more common in recent years and computer crime is always an issue that should be taken seriously.

The best way to protect yourself is to always have anti-virus protection software on your computer, only accept e-mail's from people that you know, and scan e-mail messages for viruses if your mail client allows it.

“100 Black Men” Plans To Help Prevent Juvenile Crime By Reaching Out To Youth

juvenile crimeIn Albany, GA, there is a group of men who have created a community program intended to help get kids on the right track before it's too late. These community leaders feel that the best way to prevent crime is to teach children how to stay out of trouble at a young age.

Most kids tend to partake in similar activities which are viewed as being positive such as playing basketball, watching television, and playing video games. These interests are usually what keep children from getting into serious trouble. Unfortunately, there is a small population of children who find negative, harmful interests instead.

The group of community leaders in Georgia is called 100 Black Men, and their goal is to help further the educations of black youths in the U.S., both inside and outside of the classroom.

"What we found in the area of middle schools, we found the kids needed more help because by the time they get to high school, its usually too late," mentioned Jesse Harris, one of the members of 100 Black Men.

The volunteers in this community program have vowed to hold mentoring group sessions at local middle schools once a week. It is always refreshing to see adults in the community making efforts to help the youth, especially when juvenile crime is becoming such a prevalent issue in our society.

Get Official Crime Statistics From the U.S. Department of Justice

crime statisticsIf you have an interest or curiosity about crime statistics then there is really only one website that you should visit. At the Bureau of Justice Statistics home page, you can find data about almost anything justice related.

This website has statistics about crimes and their victims, prosecution, law enforcement, criminal offenders, the federal justice system, courts & sentencing, expenditure and employment, drugs, homicide, corrections, and much more.

Plenty of people, especially those in law enforcement, have a willing desire to study crime statistics. This data can be very useful in a court case as well, which is why many lawyers tend to study this data. Thankfully, the information is made public for people like you and me so that we do not have to take any special measures to get it.

Visit www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/ to see the statistics.

U.S.A. Takes Another Look At Juvenile Crime Laws

juvenile crimeAfter further review, the United States of America is now reconsidering whether or not juvenile offenders should be charged as adults.

Recent studies have determined that prosecuting juveniles in the adult courts can have negative effects on the mental and moral developments of teenagers. These particular teens end up getting into more trouble as a result, and the crimes that they commit are much worse.

"It's really the trifecta of bad criminal justice policy," mentioned Shay Bilchik, the head of Georgetown University's Center for Juvenile Justice Reform. "People didn't know that at the time the changes were made. Now we do, and we have to learn from it."

In the 1990's, juvenile offenses were becoming a major problem and politicians took action to try and control it. However, in recent years it is apparent that juvenile crime has gone down and it turns out that alternative measures for punishing juveniles have more positive results.

"The net was thrown too broadly," mentioned Howard Snyder. "When you make these general laws ... a lot of people believe they made it too easy for kids to go into the adult system and it's not a good place to be." Snyder is a research associate at the National Center for Juvenile Justice.

Various states are now rethinking the “life without parole” punishment for juveniles. In addition, a handful of states have considered increasing the age of juvenile court jurisdiction, and some are in the process of creating some "second chance" programs.
