Uniform Crime Report Information From the F.B.I.
If you are a fan of statistics like myself then you probably have an interest in reading about different trends in crime. The website for the Federal Bureau of Investigation has information about crime rates for the past 13 years and it is easy to get lost in some of these reports. The most interesting part about it is comparing the different years and noticing the trends that have occurred. There are also some other reports available at their website including hate crime statistics, law enforcement officers killed and assaulted, as well as information about the National Incident-Based Reporting System. When you visit www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm, be sure to click on the link titled, "A Word about the Data". This is a brief explanation of how the F.B.I. gathers this information and for what purposes. Another interesting thing about these reports is that they are compilations of statistics from roughly seventeen thousand different law enforcement agencies. Of course, these agencies are located in cities with various rates of criminal activity. That is why it is important to remember that although these UCR's represent our nation as a whole, the trends that you see are not necessarily true for every city.
