Simi Valley Residents Are Given Crime Statistics For 2007

crime statisticsIf you are a resident of Simi Valley, CA or a nearby suburb then you might have an interest in seeing the crime statistics that were released for 2007. The Simi Valley PD was required to make this information public due to FBI regulations. According to the stats, it appears that certain rates have dropped while others have risen.

Violent crime, for example, decreased over the last year by 10.5%, or 18 actual committed crimes. However, the amount of property crimes has increased by 13.2%, which is a total of roughly 310 committed crimes.

The overall crime for the city of Simi Valley rose by roughly 11.1%, which some may find to be a shock. However, when you look at a city in southern California that has over 111,000 people, you have to expect some fluctuation here and there.

It is no surprise that most people are not interested in knowing about updated crime statistics, but it is actually good to be aware of them. Residents can really benefit from staying alert about issues in their community, especially when they take collaborative action on them.

The National Crime Prevention Council

crime preventionThis is probably the best online crime prevention resource that you can find. The National Crime Prevention Council, or NCPC, has an excellent website dedicated to informing the public about ways to stay safe and prevent crime. This appears to be a non-profit organization but they do accept donations to help further their program.

Upon visiting their official website I was given various updates about recent criminal activity as well as tips and information about how to prevent crime. Some of the recent news was about Internet scams, gun control, identity theft and much more.

The website for the NCPC also has various links that are designed to inform kids, teens, parents, seniors and law enforcement officers. I definitely suggest that you take a look at this website if you are interested in protecting yourself as well as those that are closest to you. Visit www.ncpc.org and wise up!

North Charlotte Neighborhood Working to Prevent Crime

prevent crimeA residential area in the northern part of Charlotte is beginning to build a neighborhood watch program to help prevent crime in the area. Unfortunately, this particular neighborhood has been the victim of many residential burglaries. In the last year, burglars hit 30 different homes in Thompson Glen. Something that I found to be a shock was that in the past 3 weeks there have been 9 more burglaries in the same neighborhood.

Some might argue that neighborhood watch programs are ineffective when local police are not patrolling. However, these programs are really the only option that communities have. Bill Carrick, a North Carolina homeowner, had a few words of his own to say about these programs.

"With more people watching, the more eyes you have in the neighborhood watching what's going on, the less problems you have", Carrick mentioned. Thompson Glen has already had their first community watch meeting and they plan on holding another one next month. As time passes, these residents can only hope for more and more neighbors to get involved.

Gun Safety Rules Straight From the NRA

gun safetyAt the website for the National Rifle Association, there is a very informative page with explicit gun safety rules and precautions. This is a very important issue and it should certainly be stressed to people of younger ages who have an interest in firearms.

There are plenty of different ways to explain gun safety but the bottom line is that the rules must be followed at all times. Getting lazy about gun safety can result in injury and possible death and it is definitely an issue that should be taken seriously by everyone.

The website for the NRA does a great job of explaining the basic points of safe gun handling. The 3 major rules, no matter how you express them are:

1. Always point the weapon in a direction that is safe and not harmful to others.

2. Always keep your finger away from the trigger unless you are preparing to fire the weapon.

3. Always keep the weapon unloaded unless you are ready to use it.

Visit www.nrahq.org/education/guide.asp for further explanations and rules about safe gun handling.

Crime Safety Program in Louisville Will Hopefully Tackle Meth Problem

crime safetyLocal police in the Louisville area are now joining forces with managers of apartment complexes in order to stop the production and sale of methamphetamine. Currently, illegal meth sales are increasing and it is starting to become a major issue in many different communities.

This new plan, which has been named "Apartment Watch", intends to educate property managers about the abundance and dangers of meth production. Hopefully, it will raise awareness throughout various communities so that residents will be able to identify these labs when they are nearby.

According to the LMPD, sixty-eight methamphetamine labs were discovered last year in the Louisville area. It is also common to find these labs in both regular homes as well as apartment rentals. Major Ozzy Gibson of the Louisville Municipal Police Department mentioned that, "One of the things we are looking at is ... let's face it. With the housing market the way it is, people losing their homes. Those families are going to go somewhere and have to live and we are gonna have other issues to face in apartment complexes."

In addition to Louisville, KY, meth labs are starting to become abundant in many other parts of the U.S. If your community has a crime safety program similar to this one then do not hesitate to learn more about it. This is a very dangerous drug and we should all make an effort to stop its production.

Crime Scene Investigation Articles

crime scene investigationWith the recent popularity of the CSI television shows, it appears that a lot of people are now becoming interested in crime scene investigation and forensic science. I recently found a great website that has many different articles about investigating crime scenes and other forms of police work. This is also a great resource for students who are pursuing careers in law enforcement.

The website has various articles about evidence collection, DNA, digital photography, crime scene response, human remains, how to package evidence and a whole lot more. Unfortunately, I cannot confirm whether or not the sources of this information are credible but it is more than likely that they have some type of experience in law enforcement.

Visit www.crime-scene-investigator.net to check out some of these articles. There is also some information present about the different colleges and universities that are available for people who have an interest in this field. This website is updated consistently so be sure to check it out on a weekly basis.

Bill Protects Many More From Hate Crimes

hate crimesRecently a bill was passed to help protect individuals who are victims of hate crimes as a result of their sexual orientation. This was passed in New Jersey and it was backed with a unanimous vote of 35-0.

New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine will be signing the bill, which now covers “gender identity or expression” and "sexual preference" in addition to religion, race, ethnicity and disability.

At a recent Senate Judiciary Committee meeting in New Jersey, Etzion Neuer gave his support for the new bill. Neuer is the director of the Anti-Defamation League for the NJ chapter.

“I am very, very pleased,” Neuer stated. “This passage is exciting because it is an opportunity to see progress. We are seeing our standards being raised, and as a society, we are progressing and setting a standard of higher expectations for law enforcement and our schools."

Although hate and the crimes that result from it are inevitable, laws such as these will hopefully serve as a major deterrent.

New York Crime Prevention Program Has Good Results

crime preventionThe Commissioner of the Division of Justice Services, Denise O'Donnell, has high hopes for her program known as Operation IMPACT.

O'Donnell mentioned that, "Operation IMPACT has been described by some as the most effective crime reduction strategy ever."

IMPACT was started back in 2004 and it has been rather effective in reducing crime. Various counties have chosen to join the program to help fight crime, and these counties have shown a significant drop in violent crime since they joined IMPACT.

O'Donnell stated, "They all devise their own crime fighting strategy because they're the ones that know their community, they know their strengths and weaknesses."

As communities get together and focus on their crime issues, they are then able to share what they have learned with neighboring communities. Effective crime prevention practices are passed on to others in hopes of seeing the same results.

"Reach out to the community, to say, do the right thing, cooperate with the police, we need you to come forward if you have information about a violent crime, we need you to be a witness in our case," O'Donnell added.

IMPACT is a state-funded program, and the amount of money that is provided to a county is based on the amount of crime that is present.

Protect Yourself From Internet Crime

internet crimeI recently read a news article about a woman from Kentucky who was the victim of an Internet crime scheme involving stolen credit card information. The woman had entered a chat room where she was given the offer of receiving a big-screen TV if she would agree to forward some merchandise to a specific address. This situation alone sounds very suspicious and I am surprised that the woman actually bought into it.

The woman had received the merchandise on her doorstep with instructions on where to forward it to. Shortly after this, she had received a phone call where she was being accused of stealing someone's credit card. Police then made the connection that the original source of the scheme had used a stolen credit card to purchase the merchandise, and then put the entire situation in this poor woman's hands.

I understand that some people may be more vulnerable than others, and I am not trying to blame anyone for their susceptibility. On the other hand, when dealing with the Internet it is crucial to remember that almost any offer that sounds too good to be true actually is. Do not ever give out your personal information to an unknown entity, especially one that you meet in a chat room. If you want a big-screen TV, you will probably have to go out and buy one at the store.

Insufficient Penalties For White Collar Crime

white collar crimeIt looks as though the average individual that is convicted of a white collar crime does not have to pay very harsh penalties. In a recent report involving 1,236 white collar criminals, only 6 percent received prison sentences of 10 years or more and 28 percent received no prison time at all. Another recent case involved a felon who had stolen over 50,000 dollars from an Ohio business and as a result was only sentenced to probation, community service and a 2,500 fine.

With relaxed penalties such as these, it is almost as though the justice system is telling white collar criminals around the world that they don't have much to worry about. On the other hand, if more strict punishments are consistently given to those guilty of fraud and other similar crimes, then we might see a decrease in the amount of white collar offenses.

As a result of the Enron scandal of 2001, the Bush administration signed the Sarbanes-Oxley Act which was intended to crack down on these kinds of crimes. Apparently, roughly 7 years later, there has not been much of a change. Hopefully as more reports and reviews are distributed in regards to these sentences, we might start to see some more promising results.
