Great Directory For Finding Batons, Crime Scene Tape and More

crime scene tapeIf you have been in law enforcement for some time now then you might already know about the directory at Officer.com. However, for those of you who are not aware of its existence, Officer.com has a huge directory that contains information about the various suppliers that sell law enforcement equipment. Whether you need batons, crime scene tape, traffic gear, flashlights, or anything else related to your field, this place can help you out.

I was pretty impressed with the amount of retailers that were in this directory. Upon visiting directory.officer.com, you will notice that you have a few different options. Visitors can either search by product name or by field type, and you also have the option of looking at a “Buyer’s Guide” for some recommendations. Not to mention, the amount of retailers that are listed in this directory is enormous. I have a feeling that manufacturers and retailers in this industry may even be required to register with the directory, but I am not certain of that.

Always be sure to check with your department before ordering any equipment. There are certainly some standards that products must meet, and you always want to know what kind of budget you are working with.

Huge Library of Crime Photos

crime photosI found a pretty useful website in terms of viewing crime photos, and visitors have two options. You can either view the photos for free at their website, or choose to buy large print versions of them. I am assuming that most of you will just view the free photos at their website, which is absolutely fine. A lot of these pictures are from different police and fire departments in the U.S., and there are even some photos taken by emergency medical technicians.

The photos that can be viewed/purchased at this website are of various crime scenes, detective cases, DEA investigations, SWAT situations, Bomb Squad situations, firefighting, auto extrications, emergency medical calls and much more. The photos are also of very high quality, and I believe that when you purchase them you can download them directly to your computer.

To check out this excellent resource visit www.onscenephotos.com. If you want to get some visual displays of various crime scenarios then this is a great place to look. If you do check out these photographs, try to pay attention to detail rather than just glancing at them. There are a lot of things to consider when dealing with a crime scene, no matter what the situation is.

Relationships Between Poverty and Crime and Gender

poverty and crime and genderIf you ever take the time to break down the differences between a male and a female, and then apply those distinct differences to rates of crime and poverty, you will see some very interesting results. I have done a little bit of research on this and have actually found several different websites that talk about it. Most websites that you find will discuss strictly facts and statistics, but there are a few that were obviously written by individuals who have gender bias issues.

Most of the research that has been conducted on this subject shows that men are more likely to commit crimes than women as a result of aggressive behavior. According to Wikipedia, a study showed that in 2001, 9 times more men were incarcerated than women. However, one must also consider a number of other factors including social and cultural differences as well as the type of crime that was committed.

Before getting too deep into your research, I suggest that you go to wikipedia.org and search for information about the relationships between poverty and crime and gender. Regardless of the assumptions that you may have about one gender or the other, you should really take a look at some of the statistical data that has been published first.

More Guidelines For Crime Scene Safety

crime scene safetyWe all know that crime scene investigators must follow various procedures and regulations in order to protect evidence at the scene of a crime, as well as protect themselves from different types of harm. A lot of these precautions are common sense, but it is important that they are followed strictly and that the proper protective gear is used.

For example, investigators must protect their hands, which is obvious, but a special type of glove must be used. There a few different types of gloves that are used, and they can be made of latex, nitrile, neoprene and Polyvinyl chloride. An individual’s eyes can also be easily contaminated or infected with something dangerous and that is why all investigators must wear safety goggles or a special facemask. This is especially important in a situation where chemicals are present, or when a crime scene is at a drug lab where meth is being produced.

For some more tips and information about how to follow crime scene safety rules, visit www.associatedcontent.com/article/487551/crime_scene_safety_how_csi_techs_deal.html. I am not sure what authority published this information but it appears that it was written by someone who is experienced in the field of crime scene investigation.

Learn About The History of Organized Crime

history of organized crimeOrganized crime is something that people are fascinated with. Yes, there are a lot of negative and immoral things about it, and those parts should not be glorified. However, there are also some positive aspects of it that people are not aware of. In some cases, organized crime benefited the poor neighborhoods where it was occurring. Although most of the profits made by the gangsters were being spent on themselves, plenty of money was given to local business owners who were loyal merchants.

If you are interested in learning about the history of organized crime then I have a couple of websites that you should check out. The first one is located at www.gangrule.com and it is loaded with information and photographs. Another website, which I think is a great source of information for just about anything, is www.wikipedia.org.

Motion pictures about organized crime are certainly entertaining, but I would not necessarily believe EVERYTHING that you see in a movie. If you really want to learn, I suggest that you visit your library and check out some books on gangsters like Al Capone, John Gotti and Lucky Luciano. Also, for some more interesting reading you should check out Sammy the Bull.

Uniform Crime Report Information From the F.B.I.

uniform crime reportIf you are a fan of statistics like myself then you probably have an interest in reading about different trends in crime. The website for the Federal Bureau of Investigation has information about crime rates for the past 13 years and it is easy to get lost in some of these reports. The most interesting part about it is comparing the different years and noticing the trends that have occurred. There are also some other reports available at their website including hate crime statistics, law enforcement officers killed and assaulted, as well as information about the National Incident-Based Reporting System.

When you visit www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm, be sure to click on the link titled, "A Word about the Data". This is a brief explanation of how the F.B.I. gathers this information and for what purposes. Another interesting thing about these reports is that they are compilations of statistics from roughly seventeen thousand different law enforcement agencies. Of course, these agencies are located in cities with various rates of criminal activity. That is why it is important to remember that although these UCR's represent our nation as a whole, the trends that you see are not necessarily true for every city.

Information About Unsolved Crimes in Florida

unsolved crimesThe Florida Department of Law Enforcement has put together a special section on their website that is dedicated to unsolved crimes, specifically homicides. They have several pictures and names of homicide victims whose killers are still not identified yet, and they have made some valiant efforts that will hopefully help close some of the cases.

One of the interesting things that the FDLE did was get together with the Department of Corrections and create decks of playing cards with victim photos and information on them. The cards were then distributed to prison inmates around the state with the hope that some of them may come forward with new information.

You can see this website at the FDLE by visiting www.tallahasseeinfragard.org/osi/unsolved. While you are there, be sure to scroll down to the bottom of the page to see unsolved crimes for other counties in the state as well.

Know The Facts About Crime Scene Safety

crime scene safetyLaw enforcement officials and personnel understand how important it is to protect their bodies from harm at the scene of a crime. When dealing with evidence and other potential hazards, it is crucial for each officer and associate to know the rules. Crime scene safety policies are developed by every department in order to protect those who are dealing with samples of bodily fluids, chemicals, sharp objects, etc.

The official website for the Federal Bureau of Investigation has some very interesting information about how one can stay protected while investigating a crime scene. The link, which is located at http://www.fbi.gov/hq/lab/handbook/intro17.htm, can inform you about the various procedures and precautions that must be enforced. If you are interested in becoming a law enforcement officer then this great resource will help prepare you for some of the hazards that you will potentially encounter.

Of course, this information provided by the FBI is for reference purposes only and it should not be used as a substitute for a specific department's training. Although every department follows the same general rules, there are still various guidelines that are unique to each one.
