Racial Hate Crimes Have More Effects Than One May Think

racial hate crimesEarlier this week, I was driving on a major state highway during regular morning traffic hours. As I approached a vehicle that was ahead of me, I noticed that something was spray painted on the car. Once I had gotten within 20 or 30 feet I realized that racial slurs were spray painted in huge letters on the body of this person's vehicle. I also noticed that the windshield had been shattered with a baseball bat or some similar object. I chose to not look inside of the car and see the person that was driving, because I figured that he or she had already dealt with their fair share of people gawking at them already.

I may not know the whole story behind this incident, but I am willing to bet that the damages and the obscenities were done by someone that had issues with anger and hate. Racial hate crimes are much more damaging than some people may realize. These acts can have extremely negative effects on the victims, of course, but they can also effect other people in various ways. Being the victim of a brutal hate crime can sometimes create hatred that had never existed before. Individuals that commit racial hate crimes are also discrediting others that share the same ethnicity or origin. It's unfortunate that disgusting crimes like these occur, because they do nothing more than fuel the fire that is simply known as hate.

A New Way to Look At Crime Photos

crime photosIf you search the Internet for photos of crime scenes, you will notice that most of the results you are given contain photos of dead bodies. I was having some trouble finding photos of other types of crimes, like vandalism and burglary. However, during my search I did come across something that is even more interesting than your average crime photos.

There is a computer software program available right now called Crime Scene Virtual Tour, which is a virtual reality program designed to give you "first-hand" perspectives of various types of crime scenes. CSVT apparently is a training tool that provides 3-dimensional reconstructions of crime scenes. It also simulates the process of investigating and collecting evidence, and if I am not mistaken, all objects in the game are provided with actual 3-D measurements. For more information, visit www.crime-scene-vr.com and be sure to check out some of their sample images.

A Crime of the Century That Some May Have Forgotten About

crime of the centuryWhen looking at Time Magazine's list of Crimes of the Century, I noticed a peculiar event involving a silent film actor by the name of Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle. The crime of the century that involved this man was a murder that resulted from forced sex. Fatty Arbuckle allegedly tried to use a beer bottle as a sex object and ended up puncturing the bladder of a young actress. Arbuckle, a successful movie star that had earned millions of dollars during his career, eventually was acquitted of the charges after appearing at three separate trials. The fact that this man murdered a woman during a rape attempt and was able to get away with it certainly shocked people around the world. His movies were then banned in the U.S. and the U.K., and all of his attempts to return to the movie industry failed.

The reason why this is considered a crime of the century is not only because of its brutal nature, but also because of the fact that there is still no certainty whether or not "Fatty" committed these acts. The woman that testified against him was named Maude Delmont, and she had a reputation for setting up famous people and blackmailing them for money. It appears that her faulty stories and accounts were what helped Arbuckle win his case. Nonetheless, his career was still ruined and he fell deep into the world of alcoholism following this scandal.

Florida's 2007 Uniform Crime Report Data

uniform crime reportA Uniform Crime Report is an official document containing data and statistics for crimes that are committed in a particular state, as well as other information like age and gender. The state of Florida has published their Uniform Crime Reports on the Internet for everyone to see, and I feel that residents of this state would appreciate viewing some of this information. These reports exist for every state in the country, but I do not know whether or not they can all be found on the Internet.

To view these UCRs for the state of Florida, visit www.fdle.state.fl.us/FSAC/UCR. This website has data from 1994 all the way up to 2007. There are several different reports for 2007, but most people will only find the first 3 of them to be interesting. Reports for older years are not as extensive, but still provide the information that you would need. In order to view these .PDF files you must have a recent version of Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded for free.

Crime Prevention and Safety Graphics - Useful Ideas

crime prevention and safety graphicsIf your community has recently raised awareness about crime safety and neighborhood watch tactics, then it is probably in your best interest to get involved. I am not suggesting that you devote your entire days to getting involved with your community, but I do believe that everyone should do their part. Sometimes it takes some visual learning for certain individuals to fully understand an issue, and there is nothing wrong with that. That is why officials and authorities that specialize in community safety are usually able to provide visual aids and demonstrations for these particular individuals.

If you are interested in looking at some crime prevention and safety graphics, then I have a couple of suggestions for you. First, I suggest that you contact the office for your city or township in order to find out when crime safety seminars are being held. These are not uncommon in most communities, and they will certainly provide you with the knowledge that you will need to protect yourself and those around you. I also suggest that you directly contact your local law enforcement agency. Do not immediately think that your police department will not be interested in helping you, because there are specific employees that are trained in this area. If you express enough interest, I am almost positive that an officer or associate of the department will gladly provide you with some crime safety information materials. These materials can explain several things including how to secure your home, suspicious activities to look out for, as well as proper actions that should be taken in the event that you may witness a crime in your neighborhood.

More About the Relationship Between Poverty and Crime and Gender

poverty and crime and genderA while back, I mentioned some information that I found in regards to the relationship between poverty and crime and gender. I am assuming that everyone took it with a grain of salt, because it is never right to generalize when speaking about a particular demographic.

Recently, I have heard some of the opinions of my colleagues about this subject and I found the variations between their viewpoints to be rather interesting. When speaking to an associate of mine who was raised in an upper-class family with plenty of financial security, I felt refreshed after hearing his opinion on the subject. This individual obviously had a sense of maturity, as well as reality. He felt that poverty did have a major influence on crime, mentioning that poor living conditions can cause one to feel stressed and hopeless, eventually causing them to make poor lifestyle decisions. He also mentioned that youths who grow up in low-income housing and are exposed to crime on a daily basis begin to see it as a normal part of life. The refreshing part about this conversation is when this person told me that growing up in poverty can be used as a motivational tool, and that it is not uncommon for a strong-minded person to understand the importance of morals. As a result, this person strives to break away from poverty in an honest way.

I also spoke to another associate of mine about how gender is a factor. This person, who happened to be a female, quickly mentioned the unflattering and unsurprising quality of man that we all know about: excessive aggression. This individual failed to mention that this is a generalization, but I continued to listen. She also mentioned that women who are criminals tend to be that way as a result of being negatively affected by men in one form or another.

These two individuals that I spoke to were not psychologists, and they were certainly not experts on the subject. However, I preferred to get the opinions of normal people like myself because my intention was to see how things like experience, bias, and humanity play a role in the forming of one's views.

What Does Crime of The Century Really Mean?

crime of the centuryTime Magazine put together a list of the top 25 crimes of the century, which were carefully picked based on many different characteristics. In a nutshell, crime of the century refers to an act that is so unique and so disturbing that it has the ability to affect people around the world on various levels. According to the article that Time put together, there are certainly some crimes that have been committed that are of far worse natures than what they have included in their list. The article also mentions that crimes like political assassinations were not considered for the list, mainly due to the fact that there has been a minor abundance of them.

The variety of crimes included in the top 25 is so widespread that the audience will get a taste of every sin or evil upon finishing the article. For example, the first crime of the century on this list refers to the kidnapping and brutal murder of Charles Lindbergh's infant child. The fact that an ordinary man had kidnapped and killed the child of such a heroic figure, causing most of the world to become deeply interested in any and all updates regarding the case, makes it such a unique crime. Another peculiar crime on the list is the case of a 34-year-old female teacher by the name of Mary Kay Letourneau having a sexually intimate relationship with a 13-year-old student, bearing 2 of his children, and eventually marrying him upon her release from prison. These are not crimes that you hear about every day.

I certainly did not agree with the entire list, and I felt that a few of the crimes were not very significant on a historical level. However, Time Magazine did do a great job choosing several different crimes that were so bizarre that they will most likely never be copied or replicated.

10 Causes of Crime - What Are The Major Influences

10 causes of crimeWhen I hear individuals speak about what they think are the top 10 causes of crime, I do not always hear the same thing. Of course, research will show what are the top 10 causes, but this also depends on what part of the world the crime is occurring in. The top 10 causes of crime in the United States is certainly not going to be the same in Russia or New Zealand.

I recently found a website called Talidari which is an art innovations website but it also has an online literature library. This website had an article that discussed 10 different causes of crime, and I must say that I did not agree with all of them. Some of the causes of crime that I did agree with were poverty, being raised in a dysfunctional family, and growing up fatherless. Of course, one cannot generalize and assume that everyone who is subject to these conditions will become criminals. On the other hand, in many cases it does hold some truth. One of the causes that I really did not feel was necessary in this list was "ecological" factors. The author mentioned that more crimes are committed during summer months when the weather is nice, which is only true to a certain degree. It also mentioned that one of the "hidden consequences of global warming will be an increase in street crime during mild winters." I must say, that I found this statement to be quite comical.

If you want to know the 10 causes of crime, then you first have to narrow it down to a specific geographic location or region. Poverty may be a factor for many large cities, but what about those parts of the world that don't really have much poverty? I would also recommend contacting the department of justice in your state and see if you can acquire any further information through them.

Unsolved Crimes in the State of California

unsolved crimesWhen I was a lot younger, I was very interested in the show "Unsolved Mysteries." My interest did not develop as a result of being fascinated by crime, because the nature of the crimes usually frightened me. The reason I was so interested in this show is because I felt comforted knowing that there are individuals in this world who will stop at nothing to solve a case, now matter how long it may take them. I am sure that plenty of unsolved cases are sitting in a file cabinet right now collecting dust, but that does not mean that they are completely forgotten about.

The website for the California Department of Justice has an archive of unsolved crimes from December of 1998 to February of 2005. To view the files, visit ag.ca.gov/unsolved. These archives vary from month to month, sometimes documenting crimes of sexual assault and rape and other times documenting crimes of murder or robbery. I am not sure when the next update will be added to the archives but I am guessing that you can contact the department directly and request this information. Also, be aware that you will need Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader to view these .PDF files.
