A Rather Peculiar Crime of the Century

crime of the centuryThe story of the staged discovery of the "missing link" between man and ape is a very interesting one, and Time Magazine included it in their Crime of the Century list. Charles Dawson, an anthropologist in England, claimed that he had found the jawbone of the 375,000-year-old creature. People around the world were then under the impression that the missing link between man and ape was an Englishman, and it was given the name "Piltdown Man".

Unfortunately, about 37 years after the anthropologist's death, scientists discovered that the jawbone was not from the 375,000-year-old creature but instead from a 10-year-old orangutan. The fact that the world continued to believe Dawson's lie for several decades after his death makes this story so unique, and that is why it is considered to be a significant crime of the century.

Historic Crime Photos And The Stories They Bring

crime photosI recently checked out a great article at the website for NPR that discusses how Los Angeles crime photographers in recent years have uncovered some interesting photos that are from several decades ago. In 2002, LAPD photographers discovered some old negatives that dated back to the 1920's and beyond, and some very significant people were seen pictured in them. Apparently, several of the crime photos have been submitted to various art galleries in the United States. To see the article, visit www.npr.org/programs/morning/features/2002/sept/lapd_photos. From shots of mob-related murders to controversial photos of female police officers, this collection is certainly a great discovery in the history of police photography.

Reference for Crime Scene Safety

crime scene safetyLearning the important points of crime scene safety is something that can take a substantial amount of time. Standards and rules for practicing effective crime scene safety are things that administrations update and improve on a regular basis. However, I think that it is also important to look at literature from previous years so that you can understand why the improvements were made.

I found a great website that has a previous Handbook of Forensic Services and it can be found at accessmylibrary.com. This handbook explains what an officer or investigator should be doing in order to protect themselves as well as those nearby during a visit to a crime scene. Although this handbook is somewhat outdated, it has a lot of useful information that can still be used today. Not to mention, readers can compare it to new literature in order to see what changes were made and why those changes were made.

Unsolved Crimes and Reward Information

unsolved crimesThere are several different websites that exist now which are dedicated to unsolved crimes and finding those who are responsible for them. Many of these websites are directly linked to various sheriffs’ departments, while others are created independently. I recently visited unsolvedcrimes.com and found quite a bit of information about homicides and murder cases that are still open.

This website has information about various unsolved murders, as well as reward information for those who can help solve the crimes. If you have an interest in this subject or wish to contribute in some way, I suggest visiting both unsolvedcrimes.com and murdervictims.com to see what kind of help you can provide.

Essentials of Crime Scene Safety

crime scene safetyLaw Enforcement personnel, technicians and investigators are subjecting themselves to many different dangers when visiting the scene of a crime. Some of the required training that police officers must go through discusses crime scene safety guidelines that are very crucial. A police officer is put in harms way every day, and sometimes it is after the crime has already been committed.

Protection from disease is a major concern for officers of the law, and there are several different ways that diseases can be acquired. If a crime scene has the presence of toxic waste or chemicals, an investigator can potentially inhale some of these harmful substances and be subjected to serious health complications. Some of the more obvious ways to acquire disease or illness include skin contact, injection and ingestion.

An unfortunate occurrence that you will hear about occasionally is an officer being accidentally stuck with a needle that was used for drugs. This can happen at a crime scene or during a body search, and the risk of getting a disease like AIDS or Hepatitis B is very real. In most cases, the officer will wear protective gloves to prevent this from happening but it is still a serious issue that law enforcement personnel must be aware of.
