A Rather Peculiar Crime of the Century
The story of the staged discovery of the "missing link" between man and ape is a very interesting one, and Time Magazine included it in their Crime of the Century list. Charles Dawson, an anthropologist in England, claimed that he had found the jawbone of the 375,000-year-old creature. People around the world were then under the impression that the missing link between man and ape was an Englishman, and it was given the name "Piltdown Man".Unfortunately, about 37 years after the anthropologist's death, scientists discovered that the jawbone was not from the 375,000-year-old creature but instead from a 10-year-old orangutan. The fact that the world continued to believe Dawson's lie for several decades after his death makes this story so unique, and that is why it is considered to be a significant crime of the century.
