The National Crime Prevention Council

crime preventionThis is probably the best online crime prevention resource that you can find. The National Crime Prevention Council, or NCPC, has an excellent website dedicated to informing the public about ways to stay safe and prevent crime. This appears to be a non-profit organization but they do accept donations to help further their program.

Upon visiting their official website I was given various updates about recent criminal activity as well as tips and information about how to prevent crime. Some of the recent news was about Internet scams, gun control, identity theft and much more.

The website for the NCPC also has various links that are designed to inform kids, teens, parents, seniors and law enforcement officers. I definitely suggest that you take a look at this website if you are interested in protecting yourself as well as those that are closest to you. Visit www.ncpc.org and wise up!

New York Crime Prevention Program Has Good Results

crime preventionThe Commissioner of the Division of Justice Services, Denise O'Donnell, has high hopes for her program known as Operation IMPACT.

O'Donnell mentioned that, "Operation IMPACT has been described by some as the most effective crime reduction strategy ever."

IMPACT was started back in 2004 and it has been rather effective in reducing crime. Various counties have chosen to join the program to help fight crime, and these counties have shown a significant drop in violent crime since they joined IMPACT.

O'Donnell stated, "They all devise their own crime fighting strategy because they're the ones that know their community, they know their strengths and weaknesses."

As communities get together and focus on their crime issues, they are then able to share what they have learned with neighboring communities. Effective crime prevention practices are passed on to others in hopes of seeing the same results.

"Reach out to the community, to say, do the right thing, cooperate with the police, we need you to come forward if you have information about a violent crime, we need you to be a witness in our case," O'Donnell added.

IMPACT is a state-funded program, and the amount of money that is provided to a county is based on the amount of crime that is present.

Crime Prevention Help - E-mail Scams

crime preventionThere was some recent activity in regards to e-mail fraud that was brought to the attention of the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department in Colorado. The e-mail messages that were being distributed are very common, and you may have seen some like this yourself.

The e-mails claimed to be from a foreign bank, in this case the Philippines, and they stated that the recipient is entitled to a rather large amount of money with no strings attached. Following this, the e-mail message asks the reader to provide personal information including name, address, and eventually bank account information.

I would hope that most people would be cautious enough to not provide information like this to an unfamiliar party, but it appears that some have fallen for the scam.

Thankfully, there are plenty of measures that one can take to prevent themselves from becoming a victim. First of all, do not ever provide personal information to someone unless you know exactly who they are. Even if you receive an e-mail from your own banker who requests this information, be sure to contact the bank by phone to determine whether or not the e-mail message is legitimate.

Also avoid clicking any links in email messages from unfamiliar sources. If the e-mail claims to be from your own bank, then manually type in the website address for your bank into your browser. I have personally received fraudulent e-mail's from what appeared to be my personal bank, and I made sure that I did not click anything inside of that message.

The Internet offers a lot of convenience, but unfortunately, there is a lot of potential for disaster. Luckily, there are plenty of people on the Internet who distribute crime prevention tips like these to the world.

Crime Prevention Efforts In Twin Falls, ID

crime preventionAn officer from the Twin Falls Police Department by the name of Luke Allen stated, "I am a one man division right now; hopefully we (will) see through the amount of work that I'm able to do that we can expand and have more people come in the next year." Allen works in the crime prevention unit for the Twin Falls PD.

Allen also mentioned that he will be spending more time working with the victims of crimes, rather than the criminals themselves. "The way I look at it, it’s more as education for the community, not so much preventing crimes, but we want to teach people and show how not to become victims of crime and teach them how to avoid victimization."

He says that he will first begin educating children in the public school system. Allen then hopes that the children will relay the information that they have learned to their parents. An important issue that he wants to discuss with the children involves Internet crime. Allen mentions, "Internet crime is one of the things we're going to look at now to avoid becoming a victim on the Internet, through various things that can occur to children."

As a result of Twin Falls' increasing population, many have noticed that there are more and more crimes involving vandalism and damage to property. Allen mentions, "We have a lot of property crimes in this area; I mean, probably one of our biggest things is our property crimes."

Crime Prevention Tips For The Holiday Season

crime preventionPolice officers in Springfield, Missouri are urging residents and locals to be aware and keep crime prevention tips in consideration for this holiday season. The holidays are a time for fun and joy but they are also a prime time for criminal activity, during both the day and the night.

Here are some tips to keep in mind so that you and your peers can stay safe:

-This is true during all times of the year, but be sure to have all of your doors and windows locked, and keep your overheard garage door closed. It is recommended that you do this even when you are at home. This also includes the entry door that connects your garage to your home.

-Never leave your automatic garage door opener in plain sight if you leave it in your vehicle. Some even recommend that you remove it from your vehicle whenever you are not driving it.

-Up-to-date insurance policies are a must.

-At night, keep outdoor lights on and interior lamps on inside of the house.

-If you are going out of town for the holidays, have a trusted friend or family member periodically get your mail and check your house for you.

Crime Prevention Tips For Residents In Canada

crime prevention Just recently, the Community Policing Center in Prince George, BC, Canada ended its routine crime prevention week. Tips were provided to residents of the community in order to properly inform them of how to fight crime in the area.

"The highlight for us was being at the Cougars game (Sunday) and it went over really well. We had Safety Bear there, some giveaways, an information counter, and the Cougars were very pleased to have us there to help them celebrate their family day," mentioned Dianne Sears, one of the coordinators at the Community Policing Center.

Crime prevention week usually brings up issues such as gang violence among youths, investment fraud, senior citizen safety, mortgage fraud, and identity theft.

Sears mentioned that the Community Policing Center also organizes other safety programs like Child Find, DARE, Block Watch, Citizens on Patrol, as well as a few others.

This facility is also a place where one can find Claudette Garcia, a officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Garcia mentioned that the power to fight crime can be found in everyone.

"Pay attention to your surroundings at your home. Also target-harden your home. Make sure you have taken ownership of your yard and buildings and vehicles," she mentioned. "That means have proper lighting, locking your buildings and your cars, keep the yard tidy, make sure that anything broken is fixed, that holes in the fence are taken care of."

City of Shawnee Advocates Crime Prevention

crime prevention
A police officer by the name of Terry Kegin has the role of crime prevention security specialist in the city of Shawnee, and apparently he is always busy.
Officer Kegan is a central component of the department's Crime Prevention program, which is designed to help citizens, local businesses and other organizations that have concerns about preventing crime and staying safe. Kegan also has the help of 3 different D.A.R.E. officers, who generally do work with children at the local schools.
During this month, Kegin spent some time speaking to Boy Scout, Cub Scout and Girl Scout groups, and has also done some speaking at a couple day care locations.
"It's the stuff I do all year long, but more so in October because people learn it's Crime Prevention Month and try to get things scheduled," Kegan mentioned.
Recently, officer Kegin made a visit to Bluejacket-Flint Elementary School for an evening event with "McGruff," the crime fighting dog. McGruff will also join Kegan on Saturday for a child ID event that is being held at the Bank of America, along with Historical Hauntings, which is being held on October 27th. They will also appear at the Shawnee Safe Scare on Halloween, which is to be held near the corner of 75th St. and Quivira Rd.
"The McGruff costume gets used quite a bit in October because Crime Prevention Month is put on by the National Crime Prevention Council in Washington and they own the McGruff trademark," Kegin mentioned. "All crime prevention officers try to push safety because we know at the end of month we've got a lot of kids that are going to be out on the street."

Louisiana Sheriff Is Here To Help With Crime Prevention

crime prevention
This month is Crime Prevention Month and fortunately there is a good local authority that wants to get involved. The Caddo Parish sheriff's department in Louisiana will be having many events to advocate the use of safety measures as well as inform the public about general crime prevention and safety awareness.
On Thursday, October 4th deputies are taking it to the streets to get in touch with the public about this awareness. They will be supplying information about robbery prevention to help inform businesses in the suburban areas. Although crime prevention is a necessity within the city limits, it is also something that should be taken seriously in the suburbs as well.
Steve Prator, local Sheriff, hopes to properly inform these businesses on how to take correct safety measures and keep their customers out of harms way during this upcoming holiday season.
Other business owners and retailers around the globe should also stay aware of the potential crime that can happen in their neighborhoods. The best way to help with crime prevention is to get involved locally and try to hold events such as these to help promote safety awareness.

Authorities Try to Reach Out to Youth in Africa for Crime Prevention

crime prevention
Kwasi Fori, the Deputy Superintendent of Police and current Director of the Public Relations Department for the Police Headquarters in Ghana has reached out to younger crowds in an attempt to help police lower the crime rate. The reason for this is because younger people tend to contribute more to the crime rate in this area.
By speaking to the youth, Fori is trying to help make sure that they will have a brighter future.
"The number of youth involved in crime and drug related issues is very alarming. Expose criminals in your communities and report all cases that involve crimes", he mentioned.
Fori spoke at a Youth Crime Watch forum about crime prevention in Ghana, or more specifically its capital, Accra. Fori mentioned that the abundance of crime and criminals in the area leads to a decrease in the movement of socio-economic growth within the country. The tranquility and safety in a society like this is also affected. "Without peace and security, we cannot achieve development", Fori said.
The Police Service, Fori mentioned, is a professional facility and it is putting a lot of funds into public education and crime prevention programs that can help keep the youth off of drugs and away from crime and violence. He reached out to the youth to create crime prevention groups within schools and other appropriate places to assist the police in fighting crime.

Teach Kids Crime Prevention When They Are Young

crime prevention
A large amount of police officers, roughly four hundred, have created a mission known as "Fight Crime: Invest in Kids Michigan." These officers are lobbying lawmakers on both state and federal levels to raise finances for early teaching and other crime prevention programs. These officers have received help from the Muskegon County's Great Start Collaborative, and they proposed their message to Muskegon last week. It was there that they met with roughly thirty people, which consisted of representatives from various education and health agencies, as well as city and county commissioners and lawmakers on a local level.

"We are advocates for improving programs that help direct children toward opportunity and success before they become delinquents," stated K.P. Pelleran, director of the Fight Crime initiative for the state of Michigan.

The officers and their associates called for more financial backing for preschool programs to help put a stop to child abuse and negligence as well as investing for after-school programs.
"The longer I'm in office, the more important I realize it is to focus on prevention," mentioned Tony Tague, who has been the Muskegon County's prosecutor for twenty-five years.

New Mexico Crime Prevention Gets Federal Boost

crime prevention

New Mexico may be getting a some much needed crime prevention assistance from the Federal Government now that the Senate Appropriations Committee has approved its FY2008 funds to prevent crime and improve the New Mexico's crime prevention capabilities, this includes a quarter million dollars for upgrades to Albuquerque's public safety information system.

The almost fity-five billion dollar bill includes money for Albuquerque, which will be utilized to implement a comprehensive public information system that includes a new dispatch and mobile computing system, a law enforcement records management system, as well as an automated reporting system.

Money was also approved for several projects that are specifically aimed at preventing crime among New Mexico youth, including a half million dollars for the New Mexico Police Athletic League to run its Gang Prevention-Intervention program. The program interfaces with school systems, communities, and local law enforcement agencies to provide positive activities to deter those involved in gangs, or at risk of joining.

"These programs seek to intervene before the negative effects of gangs and drugs have had a chance to take hold. I commend their valuable work and will do all I can to ensure this funding is included in the FY2008 final spending package," U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici said.

The New Mexico Department of Public Safety will also receive one hundred thousand dollars in FY2008 funds for equipment to combat crystal meth use in New Mexico.
