Losses resulting from online fraud in 2009 amounted to $559.7 million.

In 2008, the losses totaled $265 million. One year later, the cost per incident of cyber crime is now $575.

This is the largest jump in online fraud costs in a single year since the FBI began recording the data in 2005. The number of online-crime complaints the FBI received in 2009 also jumped by more than 22 percent.

"The figures contained in this report indicate that criminals are continuing to take full advantage of the anonymity afforded them by the Internet," commented Donald Brackman, the National White Collar Crime Center director.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

For example, the Puyallup Tribe of Indians has a page describing tribal security on its site.

The local police department normally does not patrol tribal land, which is why tribes have their own security services. In essence, these public safety departments function as their own police stations.

Officers of tribal security patrol the land and also utilize the latest security equipment to protect the people of the reservation. For instance, the public safety department of the Puyallup tribe helped install security cameras near the tribe's daycare center.

Usually, the tribal public safety department works closely with other security agencies outside of the reservation, such as the Department of Public Health, Homeland Security, and so on.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

The other 97 percent of burglaries occur in residential homes.

Clearly, safety street home security is especially important in deterring potential burglars. In this post, we'll tell you a few simple things you can do to make your home more burglar-resistant.

First, make sure your home is well-illuminated. Burglars, of course, don't want to be seen in the act, so line your walkways with lights, and put lights around your front door, porch, and any side doors. Motion-sensing lights are especially effective.

Second, think about getting a dog. When you're not home, a dog will bark when it hears intruders and can scare off burglars. Finally, invest in an alarm system and display the alarm sign prominently in the front of your home. Make sure the alarm has infrared motion-sensing abilities to sense intruders.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

The company is run by Angie Napolitano, the CEO, and her husband, James, who is also the COO.

The company has a world-class firearms training school and shooting range. Universal Safety is on Facebook, where you can find times and dates for shooting classes.

One interesting quote on the company's Facebook site is "Rely not on the likelihood of the enemy's not coming, but on our own readiness to receive him." That is the motto of the company's consulting services.

Services available include security assessments for commercial and residential locations, personal safety awareness education, and personal defense training, particularly with handguns and concealed weapons.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

The survey measured the degree of emergency preparedness among America's universities and colleges.

The study found that 85 percent of respondents have in place an emergency preparedness plan that meets the standards of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Of those without such a plan, 40 percent were close to finishing one.

Of the schools with plans that met criteria set forth by the NFPA, 97 percent were adequately prepared for a natural disaster, 98 percent were prepared for violent acts, and only 76 percent were prepared for a pandemic.

Over 90 percent of the responding schools said they had partnered with local police, public health, and other government agencies to pool resources during emergency scenarios on campus.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

Of course, this job is just as dangerous, if not more so, than that of crime scene techs.

Scientists aren't sure how long pathogens can remain active in dried blood, so the cleaning crew members must wear suits and masks for protection. To remove the blood from the scene, they wet it down, which can reactivate toxins and make the blood lethal again.

Crime scene cleaners must also be careful of insects that often swarm a crime scene area after a body decomposition situation. The insects can carry fatal diseases from feeding on the body.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

Boyle, 55, accidentally while trying to rob the hotel jewelry store. The defendant claims that his gun went off accidentally as the two men struggled.

Boyle, the security guard, is a retired New York City police detective. Mr. Boyle says that he still has fragments of the bullet from the hotel shooting in his chest.

As a result, Boyle continually experiences numbness and other after effects of the shooting. The defendant's lawyers are arguing that he was coerced into robbing the jewelry store because of his cocaine addiction, depression, and loneliness.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

Read on for tips on how to pick the right job for you.

First, review the job description to see if the position requires you to work for a security company directly or allows you to work as an independent contractor. This will make a difference in terms of how you are paid and the benefits you receive.

Next, check the hours specified in the description. Many security positions require night and weekend hours, so if you're looking for a more traditional work schedule, avoid these offers.

Finally, see if the job description specifies what level of weapons experience and training you need. For instance, if the job requires you to carry a handgun, you may have to have shooting certifications and training hours in order to qualify.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

A security door typically refers to a second door placed over your primary door for safety purposes.

However, a security door may also refer to a traditional door whose security has been enhanced through the installation of special materials or locks. You can find companies that specialize in the installation of these security doors and devices.

Some companies even offer security sliding-glass doors, which are usually the most vulnerable to compromise. Safety doors help protect you and your family from intruders, burglaries, and more.

Most safety doors require custom installations, so you should schedule a consultation if you are interested. A safety door can be made for almost any type of entryway.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

For helpful tips on how to protect yourself, your children, and your computer, visit StaySafeOnline.org.

For adults, you can view how to protect yourself from individual online threats, such as email scams, viruses, spyware, and botnets. For each threat, you can read additional information on how to identify the threat and keep your computer secure.

If you have children who use your home computer, you can learn more about cyber safety security by visiting the "protect your children page." This page has information on how to filter the search results your child sees and how to monitor your child's computer and Internet usage.

A unifying theme on the StaySafeOnline.org site is that children and adults must remain aware that people are not always who they say they are online. Predators and other criminals often pose as other people in order to win the trust of unsuspecting victims.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

Among security guards, the leading cause of death is workplace homicides, typically those that involve shootings.

To prevent senseless deaths on the job, proper security guard safety techniques are essential. Good entry and investigative techniques can help keep security guards safe and prevent fatalities.

For instance, when you're entering a potentially dangerous situation, such as a break-in scenario, you should approach the building or area with caution and call for back up. Security guards should also wear protective body armor as a preventive measure.

Above all, it's important for security guards not to just go through the motions of their duties. Although some security guard posts can get monotonous, guards must remain cognizant of the potential dangers that could occur at any time. Stay alert and prepared at all times.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

These dangers can be categorized into bio-hazards, physical hazards, and chemical hazards.

Common dangers to officers, crime scene investigators, and bystanders include blood-borne diseases, noxious vapors or gases, explosives, UV lights and lasers, and harmful chemicals used in investigative procedures.

Every police department must have procedures and policies governing the management of crime scene hazards. Proper protocol requires that law enforcement authorities survey the scene for potential dangers before beginning the investigation.

If you are a witness to a crime or are near a crime scene, make sure you stay as far away from the scene as possible. Remaining away from the scene will help officials proceed with the investigation and keep you safe from hazards.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

The site has a full set of crime data for most major cities in the U.S.

The most helpful feature of the site is that it gives users the ability to compare crime safety stats across multiple geographic regions. In this way, you can see how safe a city is relative to others around the country.

To search for crime data, you can enter a city, town, or ZIP code for the most accurate and up-to-date information. In addition to basic crime data, you can also view interesting stats on population figures, job growth, average home prices, and more.

For each city or town, the site ranks it on a scale from 1-10 on violent crime and property crime. Violent crime includes things like forcible rape, murder, robbery, and assault. Property crime, on the other hand, mostly involves theft.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

By taking a few precautions, you can greatly reduce your risk of burglary, robbery, and other home-related crimes.

The entry points to your home are the most vulnerable to intrusion, so adequately secure all of your doors and windows. Doors should have deadbolt locks, and you may want to put bars over your windows. Remember to secure sliding-glass doors especially well.

Secondly, install an alarm system in your home that alerts the authorities when a security breach is detected. Not only will the sound of the alarm scare the thief, but the automatic dialing of 911 will also get the police there faster.

Finally, think about starting a neighborhood watch program. You and your neighbors can take turns monitoring the neighborhood and immediately reporting suspicious activity.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

The Keeping Canadians Safe Act will enhance cooperative policing attempts to decrease the flow of cross-border crime in shared waters and further protect community safety economic crime.

The Government is determined to increase security and the economy. Changes will provide Canadian and United States law enforcement with the tools needed to enhance and prevent community safety economic crime across our borders. Canada has a firm commitment to working along side the Obama Administration to send a message that smuggling guns and drugs between our countries is not accepted.

The call to arms of this agreement will allow certain designated personnel to work on marine law enforcement ships on shared waters, such as the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway, and on the east and west coasts. These officers will be able to enforce the law in both the U.S. and Canada to help ensure that community safety economic crime organizations no longer take advantage of our waters.

This is a new approach to border law enforcement. With its constant changes, this provides the framework to ensure effective law enforcement, and will strengthen North American security as well as increase trade and economic growth.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

The lab that takes the most time to go over safety procedures would be chemistry labs. The many different chemicals that they might be working with are the reason to set these precautions in place.

A crime scene lab safety course is probably no different. You have to learn where all the safety equipment is and how to operate it in order for the lab to be "safe." If the rules of lab safety are not followed, people would get hurt everyday and create a terrible situation where the lab directors would get in trouble from their supervisors.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

If you have ever watched a crime scene technician ignore safety, then you need to know that you are doing the exact same thing.

If you just sit around and do not do anything for you entire life, you are not going to get anywhere. You might even end up losing your life to nothingness. You need to take the initiative and start making something of yourself. You need to be proud of who you are and what you do.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

When crime scene safety ignored presents a major problem, you need to crack down on people. They need to pay attention to what they do around a crime scene.

There are always those people that pay a little too much attention as well. When they get the chance to see something out of the ordinary they just drop everything and watch. It is like when cops pull over cars on the freeway. My question is, why do people do that? Do they not think through how they are going to steal the money? If I were a smart person, I would know what I would do from beginning to end. On top of that, if I were to wear a mask to disguise myself, I would not put a paper bag on my head and cut off my vision. I would also rob a store with a real weapon, not a banana. All of these videos show how stupid people can be.

The Crime Safety Blog: Information on how to prevent

First of all, skilled hackers can actually hack into your computer and retrieve whatever they want from the PC. They are able to trace your IP address and then take control of the computer. All of your sensitive data from passports to bank numbers could be at risk. Now, you can prevent this easily by setting up a firewall for your Internet connection. On top of that, do not click strange links asking you for your passwords. It sounds easy, but most people do not know.

Crime DOES Pay Unless YOU Prevent It!

I have a book on 35 different crime scenarios and what to do if you are a victim.

This might be the most important information you'll ever receive. This is to help them understand the importance of being safe in school, at home, and in public. Most schools implement the D.A.R.E program, which stands for Drugs and Arms Resistance Education. This program teaches the students what happens when you get involved with gang violence and drugs. Most kids learn about this at the fourth or fifth grade level. The program has proven to work and lower the crime rate in many cities. Make sure to check your local school to see if it has one in place.

Crime DOES Pay Unless YOU Prevent It!

I have a book on 35 different crime scenarios and what to do if you are a victim.

This might be the most important information you'll ever receive. Not just trees but bushes, shrubs, plants and fences. A well maintained yard is important in deterring criminals and leaves the impression that an active presence is in the space. Plant trees in your yard. This is seen not only as more attractive but more safe. Think of planting thorny brush or shrubs under your windows to prevent easy access. If you live in a desert area, cactus are great for this purpose. Also place a fence around your perimeter, even if it is short, this will create yet another obstacle and alert your neighbors more easily if someone is trespassing onto your property.

Crime DOES Pay Unless YOU Prevent It!

I have a book on 35 different crime scenarios and what to do if you are a victim.

This might be the most important information you'll ever receive. It makes them look 'official' so to speak. When you see one on a officer's uniform it adds to the prestige of the uniform. So can anyone just go and buy one then? Apparently so, since a quick search of ebay items shows that there are plenty of police crime scene emblems up for sale. CSI crime scene investigator police patch from Las Vegas, Calhoun county crime scene investigator patch, Pennsylvania State Police patch, Miami, Albuquerque and many more are all up for auction. Do you think this is wise or safe that these patches can be bought and worn by just anybody?

Crime DOES Pay Unless YOU Prevent It!

I have a book on 35 different crime scenarios and what to do if you are a victim.

This might be the most important information you'll ever receive. Yes, they get their gloves on and inspect for evidence and take crime photos. Those crime photos are very important to them so they can look back on it for solving the answer.
Not only is it very important, they need to take pictures where everything was in place or else it messes up their final solution to the mystery.
